Why Family Photography Is About So Much More Than Beautiful Photos
As a Melbourne family photographer, I’ve come to realise that family photography is about so much more than creating beautiful photographs.
Parenting is hard.
It’s incredibly rewarding and filled with so much love, but let’s be honest—it can also be exhausting. There seems to be endless advice telling us how we should raise our children, while at the same time our kids are growing up surrounded by social media and constant messages about how they should look, behave, eat, dress and live.
As parents, we can’t control all of that. We certainly don’t have all the answers. But I believe one of the most important things we can give our children is the reassurance that they are loved, valued and accepted exactly as they are.
And something as simple as a family photograph can help reinforce that message.
You belong here
When we think about family photography, we often think about the beautiful photographs we’ll have at the end.
But there is something much deeper happening.
A photograph of a child surrounded by the people who love them tells a very simple story:
You belong here.
You are loved.
You are an important part of this family.
Seeing themselves included in family photographs can help children develop that sense of belonging and security. They see themselves as part of something bigger—their family, their story and the people who love them most.
And I think that’s pretty powerful.
We photograph everything… but how much do we actually print?
Our children are probably the most photographed generation in history. Our phones are filled with thousands of photographs, yet so few of them ever make it off the screen.
I completely understand why. Digital photographs are convenient, and I love having them too.
But there is something different about a photograph hanging on your wall.
Your children see it every day. They walk past it without even thinking about it. It becomes part of their home and quietly reminds them: this is my family, these people love me, and I belong here.
And it’s not just the children who benefit.
We all have those days. The exhausting days, the stressful days, the days when everyone is tired and the house feels chaotic.
Then you catch sight of a photograph on the wall.
You see your children laughing. You remember how little they were. You remember that moment.
And suddenly you’re reminded of what really matters.
Don’t wait for the perfect time
I’ve had so many clients tell me that after previous photography sessions they purchased the digital files with every intention of printing them… and then life got busy.
The USB went into a drawer. The files stayed on the computer. And years passed.
This is one of the reasons I believe so strongly in printed photographs. I don’t want your memories hidden away somewhere—I want you to live with them.
As a Melbourne family photographer, I also understand that having your family photographed can sometimes feel like something you should do when everything is just right.
But please don’t wait.
Don’t wait until you’ve lost weight, your hair is longer, the children are older, the house is renovated or everyone has the perfect outfit.
There will always be a reason to wait.
But your children are growing.
They won’t look back at these photographs and notice the things you were self-conscious about. They’ll see you.
The person who loved them, cuddled them, played with them and was there through all those ordinary little moments that make up their childhood.
They’ll see their family.
They’ll see the love.
And one day, those photographs may mean more to them than you could ever imagine.
So don’t wait for perfect. Capture your family as you are, right now.
Whether we’re creating relaxed family portraits in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges or capturing your family in a more classic studio setting, my goal is always the same—to create photographs that tell the story of your family and the love you share.
Because every chapter of life deserves to be remembered.
