Evie and her real-life doll!

When 3 year old Evie was told she had a little sister the first thing she said was "I knew it!". She wanted a baby sister so badly and her wish came true!

newborn and family photographer Melbourne

I had the pleasure of photographing both Evie and her new sister, Maya, as newborn babies. Mum is a very talented ex-dancer who now runs a pilates studio in Upper Ferntree Gully (Melbourne's Eastern Suburbs). Evie is already taking after her Mum with her love of ballet and dancing, so when I discovered Mum had given birth to another little girl I put my thinking cap on! I wanted to incorporate a ballet theme with both girls!

Newborn photography sessions usually take place within the first 2 weeks of bub being born. Mum had pre-booked her photography session, so once she let me know she had given birth to baby Maya I only had about a week to think of a set up and prep for it. This meant I was vigorously making a newborn tutu the day before the photo shoot! Luckily Mum had a tutu outfit for Evie and gorgeous headband for Maya, along with those oh-so-adorable knitted baby ballet shoes!

ballet themed baby photos

Evie being an active 3 year old toddler, I wasn't sure how we would go achieving this set up but she was so well behaved during the photography session and absolutely doted on her baby sister. Plus throwing in a little Photoshop magic helped us achieve the final portraits!

Maya's Ballet-Themed Newborn Photographs

Maya wasn't too sold on the idea of sleeping when she first arrived in the studio to have her photos taken! Instead I photographed her awake in her little tutu outfit and Mum just loved these photographs of her.

More Sibling Portraits

Since Evie just loves cuddling Maya, we made sure to capture this too. How adorable are these two! I must admit that Maya is a spitting image of Evie when she was a newborn. It will be interesting to see if she grows up to look just like her big sister!

It will be lovely to see these girl growing up together. Mum is also a good friend of mine, and with baby Maya now 4 months old, there is a striking resemblance between them!
