7 Simple Ways to Look Better in Family Photos

One of the most common things I hear before a family photography session is:
“We’re not very good in front of the camera.”
The reality is that most people feel this way.
The good news is that looking great in family photos has very little to do with being photogenic and a lot more to do with feeling comfortable.
After photographing hundreds of families, I’ve found that the best images usually happen when people stop worrying about posing and simply enjoy spending time together.
Here are seven simple ways to help you look and feel your best during your next family photography session.
1. Keep Moving
One of the quickest ways to look awkward in a photograph is to stand completely still.
Movement creates natural body language and helps people relax.
Walking together, cuddling your children, playing with your dog or simply shifting positions can make a huge difference.
When people are moving naturally, they tend to look less stiff and more like themselves.
If someone is feeling particularly nervous, I will often encourage them to move around before settling into a position. Even something as simple as a quick laugh or shake-out can help release tension.
2. Relax Your Shoulders
Raised shoulders are one of the most common signs that somebody feels uncomfortable in front of the camera.
Many people don’t even realise they are doing it.
Parents holding young children are particularly prone to lifting their shoulders towards their ears without noticing.
Taking a moment to relax your shoulders instantly creates a more natural and confident appearance.
It’s a small adjustment that can make a surprisingly big difference.
3. Give Your Hands Something To Do
People often worry about their smile, but hands are usually what give away nervousness.
When hands are hanging awkwardly by your sides, they can make the entire pose feel unnatural.
Instead, give your hands a purpose.
Hold your child’s hand.
Pat your dog.
Place a hand on your partner’s shoulder.
Wrap your arms around your children.
Natural interactions always photograph better than forced poses.
4. Focus on Your Family, Not the Camera
The best family photographs rarely happen when everyone is staring directly into the lens.
Instead, they happen when families focus on each other.
Talk to your children.
Laugh together.
Cuddle your dog.
Tell a joke.
When people become absorbed in the moment, genuine expressions naturally follow.
Those authentic reactions are what create meaningful photographs.
5. Trust Your Photographer With Angles
Most people have certain things they feel self-conscious about.
Whether it’s a double chin, posture or simply not knowing where to stand, these concerns are completely normal.
A professional photographer is constantly looking at angles, lighting and positioning throughout the session.
Sometimes a small adjustment, such as lifting your chin slightly or turning your shoulders, can completely transform a photograph.
Trust the guidance you’re given.
There is usually a good reason behind it.
6. Choose Clothing Carefully
What you wear plays a significant role in how confident you feel.
The goal isn’t to wear something fancy.
The goal is to wear something that feels comfortable, fits well and complements the rest of the family.
When people feel comfortable in what they’re wearing, that confidence naturally comes through in photographs.
Neutral tones and coordinated outfits generally work well, but comfort should always come first.
7. Stop Thinking About Posing
This might be the most important tip of all.
Family photography should not feel like a modelling session.
In fact, some of the most beautiful images happen between poses rather than during them.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is connection.
When families focus on enjoying time together, the photographs become more authentic, emotional and meaningful.
The Secret to Looking Great in Family Photos
Looking great in family photos isn’t about being naturally photogenic.
It’s about feeling comfortable enough to be yourself.
Move naturally.
Relax.
Interact with your loved ones.
Trust your photographer.
When you do that, you’ll create photographs that not only look beautiful but also genuinely reflect who you are as a family.
And those are the images you’ll treasure for years to come.
