Including Your Fur Baby in Your Newborn Photography Session

For many couples, their dog is their first baby.

Long before the nursery is decorated and the newborn arrives, there’s often a much-loved dog at the centre of the family. They’ve been there through life’s milestones, provided companionship and become an important part of everyday life.

So when a new baby arrives, it’s only natural that many parents want their fur baby included in their newborn photography session.

At Captured Hearts Photography, we absolutely love welcoming dogs into newborn photography sessions because they are such an important part of your family’s story.

Your Dog Was Part of the Journey

For many couples, getting a dog is one of the first major steps they take together.

In many ways, dogs become the “practice baby” before children arrive.

They are cared for, loved and included in family traditions long before a newborn enters the picture.

That’s why including them in your newborn photography session can be so meaningful.

Your dog has been part of the journey that brought your family to this moment, and they deserve to be remembered as part of this chapter too.

Capturing the Transition From Dog Parents to Parents

One of the things I love most about including dogs in newborn photography sessions is documenting this unique transition in a family’s life.

Before the baby arrived, your dog was likely the centre of attention.

Now, your family is growing.

Photographs that include both your newborn and your dog tell the story of this transition beautifully.

Years from now, these images become a reminder of a very special period when your family was changing and growing.

Dogs Add Personality to Newborn Sessions

Newborn photography sessions are often calm, gentle and focused on creating beautiful images of your baby.

Adding a dog to the mix can sometimes introduce a little chaos.

And honestly, that’s part of the fun.

Dogs bring personality, curiosity and spontaneity to a session.

Whether they’re sitting proudly beside the family, looking curiously at their new little sibling or simply wanting to be involved in everything that’s happening, these moments often create some of the most memorable photographs.

You Don’t Have to Include Your Dog in Every Photo

Some parents worry that bringing their dog means they need to be involved in the entire session.

That’s not the case.

Every family is different.

Some families choose to include their dog in just one or two family portraits.

Others want their dog involved throughout as much of the session as possible.

The beauty of a professional newborn photography session is that it can be tailored to suit your family’s preferences.

There is no right or wrong approach.

A Flexible Studio Experience

One of the reasons families enjoy bringing their dogs to my studio is because there is plenty of flexibility.

Unlike many newborn photography studios, I genuinely welcome dogs.

If your dog needs a break, there is outdoor space available where they can relax, stretch their legs or go for a walk.

Quite often, dads will take the dog outside while we continue photographing the baby and other family members.

This helps everyone stay relaxed while still ensuring your dog is included in the photographs that matter most.

Local Families Have Even More Flexibility

For families who live nearby, there is another option that works really well.

Many choose to begin the session with family portraits that include their dog.

Once those images have been captured, dad can take the dog home before returning to continue with the remainder of the newborn session.

This creates a relaxed experience for both the family and the dog while still ensuring those important photographs are captured.

Not Every Photographer Welcomes Dogs

One thing many families are surprised to learn is that not all newborn photographers allow dogs in their studio.

Some photographers worry about fur, mess or the unpredictability that pets can bring to a newborn session.

Personally, I see it differently.

If a dog is an important member of your family, then they’re welcome.

A little dog hair is a small price to pay for photographs that genuinely reflect your family’s story.

Creating Memories That Become More Valuable Over Time

The reality is that our dogs don’t stay with us forever.

That’s one of the reasons these photographs become so meaningful.

Years from now, you’ll look back at images of your newborn baby and remember not only those early days of parenthood but also the dog who was there at the very beginning.

The dog who was your first baby.

The dog who welcomed your newest family member home.

The dog who helped shape your family’s story.

Those memories are priceless.

Why Include Your Dog in Your Newborn Photography Session?

Including your fur baby in your newborn photography session allows you to capture a unique moment in your family’s life.

It’s the moment when your family grows.

The moment your dog becomes a big brother or sister.

The moment a new chapter begins.

These photographs tell a story that can never be recreated later.

And that’s exactly why they’re worth capturing.

At Captured Hearts Photography, we believe every member of the family deserves a place in your memories โ€” including the four-legged ones.
